Chinese/Asian American Folklore and Identity Studies in the USA.
Juwen Zhang
Since the studies of ethnic identity become a topic in academic circle in the USA in 1950s, American folklorists have been treating identity as the very core of folklore studies. In fact, since the establishment of American Folklore Society in 1888, the goals for folklorists were largely “ethnic” and “racial,” though the “low” “folks” were the accepted concepts. With the particular ethnic and racial complex in the USA, Chinese descendents or Chinese Americans have played a unique role because of their history marked by the notorious Exclusion Act and because of rising role of China in all aspects of American life.In fact, Asians have demonstrated a different history of migration from that of the Europeans and Africans. For example, the Japanese experienced the Internment during the WWII, and a large influx of refuges from Southeast Asian occurred in 1970s.In the current global migration and trade, Asian cultures and peoples have gained increasing importance in the USA.Within this broad context, how are the Chinese/Asian Americans maintaining their folklore and folklife in cross-cultural interactions in the USA?How is their folklore playing a role in the construction of their ethnic and cultural identities? How is the situation of the studies of Chinese and/or Asian American folklore?
This talk will provide a brief discussion of these issues, and, specifically, discuss some examples of the role of folklore in the political and cultural struggles in some Chinese communities. For example, the Chinese funeral rituals in Philadelphia, the rebuilding of a Chinese cemetery in Portland, and the installation and dismantlement of a dragon sculpture in a Chinatown. From these studies, I will share some ideas that I have tried to think through, that is, the “validity” and “vitality” of traditions, “ownership” and “right” in using and sharing traditions in cross-cultural contexts.
