CEC183 INTRODUCTION TO
CULTURAL TRADITION AND FOLKLORE STUDIES

This module provides a lively introduction to contemporary folklore studies and forms an important foundation for the more advanced and in-depth study of folklore at Levels 2 and 3. Its aims are:
To introduce tradition and folklore as aspects of culture.
To survey the major categories of tradition, illustrating them with a wide range of examples.
To introduce the academic study of folklore through consideration of examples in relation to issues such as variation, context and function.
To foster skills in library, archival and Internet-based research, and encourage students to contribute to the resources of the Archives of Cultural Tradition at NATCECT.
To give practical experience of independent field research.
Teaching Methods
Teaching is by lectures (1 hour per week), seminars (1 hour per week) and tutorials (as required).? The lectures focus on the definition of key terms and genre classifications, with reference to examples (Aims 1 and 2, Knowledge 1-3).?Seminars develop the content of lectures through in-depth and critical consideration of examples in relation to analytical and interpretive methods, preparing students for assessed work (Aim 3, Knowledge 4).?Tutorials will provide individual guidance for assessed work.
